The Letter “L”

26 09 2007

One of my nieces is having trouble making the sounds that the letter “L” represents.  Instead of saying “flowers”, she says, “fyowers”.  “Colors” becomes “coyers”.

My sister and I have mused at how cute this is.  She admits that she’ll miss this stage of development – there’s just something sweet and innocent about it.  But we also agree that it would be a real tragedy if my niece continued to speak like this when she’s in high school.  Children grow out of most speech difficulties in time.  What is cute for a 3 year old is not so cute for a 30 year old.

For the follow of Christ to truly be salt and light in this world, we too must grow.  Failure to grow spiritually can often lead to one’s spiritual life completely caving in.  Our challenge is to learn.  We must read, we must pray, we must fellowship with other believers, we must seek instruction.  Otherwise Christ becomes quite appealing to the world around us.  It’s no wonder Jesus becomes so easy to reject – look at all the followers who can’t pronounce their L’s.
